Our History
The National Bowling Association, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation organized in August 1939 in Detroit, Michigan, for the express purpose of encouraging Black bowlers to develop their skills in the game of Ten Pins.
The organization was originally known as the National Negro Bowling Association. At the time of its founding, Black bowlers and other non-Caucasians were not permitted to belong to the American Bowling Congress or the Women’s International Bowling Congress because of restrictive clauses in their constitutions.
Because TNBA membership included a large number of Asian, Hispanic, Native American and other bowlers of color, the organization was renamed The National Bowling Association, Inc. in 1944.
TNBA actively participated in the fight for Equality in Bowling. In 1950, both the American Bowling Congress and the Women’s International Bowling Congress removed their non-Caucasian membership clauses.
Since 1951, TNBA members have enjoyed the privilege of competing in open sanctioned leagues and tournaments.
Our Ongoing Mission
The constitutional purpose of TNBA has always been to foster and promote the game of Ten Pins among both men and women. Membership is open to all bowlers without regard to race, creed or color.
Although approximately 80 percent of our present membership is Black, TNBA has no racial restrictions regarding membership or participation.
TNBA proudly stands behind its motto as a Promoter of Sportsmanship, Fellowship and Friendship . These ideals are advanced through organized competition, education and service.
Developing Young Bowlers
TNBA serves as a recruiting agency and point of entry for young bowlers who might not otherwise receive the encouragement, instruction and guidance needed to learn the game and develop essential bowling skills.
Preparing Bowlers for Competition
Through encouragement, education and training, TNBA prepares bowlers to compete on equal terms in leagues, tournaments and competitions of their choice.
Advancing Equality
TNBA has been, and continues to be, a major factor in the integration of Black bowlers into the bowling world and in the advancement of equality throughout the sport.
Breaking Down Barriers
The relationships formed through competition, along with the respect earned through superior skill and sportsmanship, help break down unfavorable attitudes and racial barriers.
